Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these drugs should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
